Jump to today. I needed to transfer a large sum of money from a savings account in one bank, to a current account in another. They purposed to charge me £30 to do this electronically. I think this is not only extortionate, but pissing on my back and trying to tell me it is raining. But I did have an eureka moment. I now know why lampposts are spaced the distance they are from one another! Who was the genius who worked it out? Please tell me! Part 2 - The Revenge

Over 50 000 words in on the latest book, new estimate of 145 000 in total. Coming back to writing SF after three books on WW2 has been a revelation and with the experience of narrowing down what works to drive the action, this book looks like it will read like a ride down some fast roads on a motorbike. (Guess what I have doing to enjoy the sun. Only a momentary slip, officer.)
This should be finished well in time for the economic implosion due to hit everyone's finances in the next twelve months. Either put your head between your legs and kiss that little baby goodbye, or find something useful for when you have to break into your local store. Good to see capitalism coping so well with the people who really don't care that they run the world ... bankers and rich bankers.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://lost-in-blogspace.blogspot.com/2011/09/summer-part-2-revenge.html' title='Summer. I’m 30 000 words in, just over a seventh of the way done according to my outline, so the prospect of an humongous work that will need editing down to saleable size look entirely possible. Still, it’s better than coming up with new media slants on the events of 11th September, 2001. With all due respect to the grief the various siblings presumably suffered, who was the creative genius who came up with the idea for Twins of The Twin Towers? Did you punch the air, arsehole, when it popped into your sad little brain? I’m all for free speech, but a modicum of self-censorship can go a long way. For instance, if I wrote exactly what I think of people like you, I’d probably have MI5 knocking on the door for inciting a riot via the internet. (That’s the trouble with writing an action gothic SF book … conflict, conflict, conflict. It seeps out into real life. I’ll go and have a little lie down, now.)

British Double Standard Time

If the punishment for exhorting others to meet up for a riot – at which no-one turns up, apart from the police – is four years in prison, how many years will Tony Blair get for exhorting MPs to vote to go to war on the basis of dodgy evidence? Oh, wait, this Great Britain, so Double Standard Time must be in place. No chance of populous retribution being speedily brought down upon his head, then.

If rioters are being given prison terms, because the situation demands it and an example needs to be set, then how many more MPs are going to join the yobs because they committed fraud when claiming expenses. Oh, silly me: Double Standard Time again, so no chance of populous indignation being translated into justice, then.

If the courts are going to sit through the night to ensure swift pronouncements on guilt or very guilty, should we not have had a few bankers in the dock by now, instead of letting them stick their fingers up at us and start claiming big bonuses again? Oh, Double Standard Time.

Another thing we suffer in Great Britain is Double Speak Time. While CCTV has enabled the police to catch these law-breakers, I remember being told that the reason we should have so many was the deterrent factor. This attitude is apparently "anti-authoritarian." Gosh, I feel such a bad boy. My rough calculations seem to indicate that if stealing/looting water from Lidl to the value of £3.50 equates to 6 months in prison, then being a banker involved in causing the economic chaos that may have, in part, contributed to the riots, is equivalent to being strung up to a lamppost. Or have the courts missed their chance to work as quickly to provide summary justice for white-collar crime as they have done for the yobs/opportunists?

News of The World find Madeleine Mccan (and cure for cancer)

My suggestion for the only headline that can save them.
I’m tempted to say more, but anyone who knows me will be aware of my feelings towards The Red Tops already and that expressing them here is a waste of my time. Over thirty-five years ago, I borrowed a book from my local library – it was 1984. Orwell’s dystopian view of a totalitarian government so afraid of losing power that it began changing the language to prevent seditious thought of even being formulated seemed so relevant in the early Seventies. It still seems a worthwhile warning today, and sadly, I suspect it will still be necessary in thirty-five years time, but I hope that the children of our children will be able to borrow that book from their local library, free of charge. Keep protesting, but above all else, keep reading and keep learning. A people shouldn’t be afraid of its government, the government should be afraid of its people. Oh, I'm the one at the front with the beer-gut ...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k__j90LsPwo&feature=player_embedded

Sarah Lund

Oh, Sarah, what am I to do on Saturday nights, now that you are not there to bewitch me as you trawl Copenhagen for the culprit in The Killing? So, you begin to expand your plot – a narrative centred, say, on anthropomorphic creatures of the countryside: a mole, a water rat, a badger and a toad. And then you find out about Kenneth Grahame …
My writing life has been haunted by my ability to soak up the Zeitgeist without being consciously aware of it. I spent the last couple of months mulling over concepts about reality and thought I’d found a new spin on it. I won’t tell you who the author is that got there ahead of me – suffice to say it’s one I admire and the novel was one of only a few I hadn’t read of his. I know friends tell me that there’s nothing really new – only different interpretations – and that I’ll impose my style and voice on the narrative, but it really is bloody annoying to discover someone has already used your main ideas, together with subplots and themes.
Still, I’m a pretty dab hand with smoke and mirrors and I’m convinced I’ll uncover an even better story in there amongst the ideas. That, of course, would be the actions of people with some semblance of a backbone. To divert us from making this ironic observation however, they have been rather sly. Cunningly, they appear to have chosen the same date as the local elections, so that all of us poor saps who believed the Lib-Dems and voted for them, and who are intending to stomp to the polling stations to register our disgust, will also find ourselves presented with a watered-down version of one of the reasons we voted for a selection of those expenses-tainted buggers we call politicians in the first place. I predict indecision – and more stomping from the Polling Station.

And Double Summertime may be on its way, as the coalition considers putting our clocks forward one hour ahead of GMT and keeping BST. Luckily, this experiment will coincide with a drastic reduction of lollypop men and women as the cuts the coalition insisted on rushing in takes effect. Still, it will attract the tourists. Who wouldn’t want to watch texting kids negotiate heavy traffic? I mean, adults seem to find it difficult enough in a car-free zone as it is (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPpzj4PjNjU), so self-centred teenbots should provide far greater sport.

Best film seen this week: The Men Who Stare At Goats

Best guess celebratory death: Katie Price – silicon poisoning, caused when she attempts one dance manoeuvre too many.

A rose by any other name ...

So, all that glistens is not gold, apparently. It would appear that, for some time now, the advertising industry has been ‘air-brushing’ photos of model’s faces to make us like/envy them more. At a guess, I’d say this practice has been going on since, oh, I don’t really know, but let’s say from 1839 onwards – after the first daguerreotype photograph of a person was taken in France. Whether attempts to have a sort of kite-mark system to indicate the degree of digital manipulation will succeed (rather like the Footage Shown Does Not Represent Actual Game Play from adverts for consol games), I doubt much progress will be made until after the tabloids are forced to stop printing pictures of young women with their ‘tits out for the lads.’ That campaign never seems to gain much traction (you’d think it was male-dominated world and equality an illusion, wouldn’t you?), so persuading women to vote with their purses and say, have a temporary, week-long, embargo on buying magazines until such publications stop/reduce displaying idealised versions of femininity, seems a bit of a pipe dream on my part. With young women killing themselves by shoving silicon into their bottoms in an effort to ‘look good’ (Claudia Seye Aderotimi); with anecdotal evidence that some believe they have to replicate on-line porn to ‘fit in’; and with the safety net of Botox for when they get over twenty-three, I suspect the rose-coloured tint of advertising aimed at them will be here for some time. Unfortunately.

Oh, there’s also been a revolution in Egypt, this week …

Sing-a-song of something

You know how it is: you sell 50 million albums*, you get a Golden Globe for Best Original Song*, Rolling Stone rank you 58 in their 100 Greatest Singers of all Time*, then you get chosen to sing your national anthem just before your country’s most prestigious sporting event. You select a natty black number, which has no possibility of a ‘wardrobe malfunction’, there’s only an expected 100 million people or more going to watch, and the big screen has just shown President (ex) George Dub settling down to enjoy the game.

Now, what could you possibly do that might, initially, be missed by those not totally familiar with the traditions of your country? Flip the bird as you clasp the microphone? Pass wind in tune to the music? Fondle yourself? No, instead Christina Aguilera had brain-fade and sung (well, belted out actually) the wrong words of The Star Spangled Banner before this years Superbowl. I did notice a bit of hesitation at the time, but America’s national anthem is not top of my list of lyrics I must memorise (neither, it appears, is it for Christina), and the incident passed me by.

What she should have done – instead of pushing on regardless as any professional does – is have a Hollie Steel moment. You may remember the ten-year old got into a bit of a tears-before-bedtime episode (without the tears) on Britain’s Got Talent, and seeing a grown-up do likewise would have been that much more entertaining and probably would have earned her less flak. It could set a trend.

* Data from Wikipedia and any resemblance to the facts is entirely co-incidental.

This Sporting Life?

So, Andy Gray and Richard Keys are private sexists, (now ex) public pundits and the world fractures in some typical tribal schism where one minority camp is uttering ‘get a life’ to the other, while their opponents in the real world reply: ‘smell the coffee’. You hear the usual chants from the usual quarters and for one set of supporters it seems as though it’s a question of who can shout the loudest or exhibit the most passion who will win. (Any allusion to how rival football crowds behave is entirely intended – perhaps we should settle the argument with a penalty shoot-out using a replica of Bernard Manning’s head.) It’s like some philosophical game we continually have to indulge in as we stagger towards the goal of equality, forever having to bat away at those who won’t concede the point and refuse to play by the rules. (Please insert other sporting metaphors as you see fit.) Private or public – sexist behaviour is just that. Well, with regard to bankers and Barclays’ Bob Diamond’s assertion that ‘the time for remorse is over’ (it’s not remorse, Bob, it’s anger, and no, it isn’t time), please arrange these items into a possible strategy for satisfaction: banker, lamppost, rope. Now Sir John Vickers – due to report on the findings of The Independent Commission on Banking (set up by George Osboy (sic) last June) in September of this year – has hinted at suggestions of major reform. Well, bugger me – it takes a year to come to that conclusion and it’s only going to be advisory? Why isn’t the government doing something now to defend us from these money-addicted risk takers, instead of instituting immediate major cuts to reduce the deficit? Isn’t one of the things they’re supposed to do is protect our society from threats to it?

Meanwhile, the cuts start to bite. My local library (in a building which has been used for such for over one hundred years) is now scheduled for closure in the scramble to save money. We’re allowing lobotomies to be performed on ourselves and our children, sacrificing the beauty and benefit of knowledge that comes from books – and free books at that – in an over-eager bid to help offset a problem caused by bastards swaggering around in the complacent belief they are ‘too big to fail’. Well, when the councils begin switching off every other streetlight to reduce spending, I’d like to propose a use for the redundant ones. First you find a banker …

New Year, new ideas

There has been a hiatus in my blog due to the fact that just before Christmas my PC became an ex-PC.
I have decided on my Big Idea – the concept that should attract the reader – and I have roughed out some ways this may be achieved, but who am I going to put in it to drive it along? My last two novels have had the zest that is the conflict between differing approaches to war by two of the protagonists, but I am drawn to creating someone new. This will mean different problems … or am I just avoiding the need to devise a fresh dynamic between two excellent characters?

I think all who known me know the answer to that.

I am also ducking the issue by taking a hatchet to an earlier novel – after the gap of twenty months or so I can see where it could be tightened up and added to. (I’m also trying to think of ways to retain some explicit sex scenes that get in the way of the plot.) It’s a labour of love, but someone’s got to do it.

<span style='font-size:12.0pt;
The other evening I attended a talk about Goebbels and Spin-doctors. Though the speaker gave a prominent disclaimer about any comparison between the various contemporary Labour politicians he mentioned and the Nazi propaganda minister, it was tempting to point out that it was, perhaps, a little late. It’s rather like calling someone a miserable cretin of a parasite at a heated public meeting and immediately apologising unreservedly – the apology may appear fulsome, but the comment still lingers. That aside, the key questions that popped into my head were: how sceptical should the general public be of what our leaders (or anyone in authority) tells us, and isn’t it a sad reflection on the human condition that those who have control feel that the only way to continue in that position is to manipulate the truth?

Through my own experiences I know of one occasion when a D-Notice must have been invoked; an exhibit in the British Museum which distorts the truth of how the artefact was discovered; and can point to the editorial changes in a television programme, in which I took part, that were made to construct an untrue narrative that the director wished to portray.

Isn’t it interesting how we say we seek the truth, yet readily accept the lies? I, for one, do not believe in the great conspiracies about 9/11, but I wouldn’t be surprised if, in the future, it were to come to light that someone in the Bush administration knew an attack was imminent and did nothing about it, nor if were found that United Airlines Flight 93 had been shot down, rather that as a result of any action by the passengers. I could handle that truth. But if it is, then it will be long time coming before it will surface.

Which leads onto my next book …

Once again, I am going to give a flavour of my thought processes as I go from idea, to outline, to first draft, and the first consideration is this: how much of a message about the importance of Truth do I want to include? Too much Message gets in the way of a good story, so the problem will be how to conceal it. (The irony of this is not lost on me, in fact, it will give the novel extra layers.) The story will include Goebbels and I am tempted to make it a false narrative … indeed, having just written that, I have decided that that is what I shall do: I shall construct a history. If the bastards can mislead us about why we go to war these days, then I sure as hell can do the same with fiction.

Watch this space …

Apropos of nothing: I discovered another golf-ball in my garden today. This makes the third(?) in three years. I do not live near a golf course. Either someone has devised a wonderful psychological practical joke, or someone’s back garden golfing practice is not up to par.

James and McKinley have orders to kill Oberstleutnant Schmidt-Meyer. The German is interrogating a British officer who has with him a unique coding machine. Now read on:-

The fighting in the orchard intensifies. McKinley provides some measure of protection when he explodes a white phosphorous grenade nearby. Within moments of this, another troop of Germans arrive. They mistake James and McKinley for comrades and set up a machine gun position to defend against the patrol of Allied troops. As their own forces begin firing mortars at them, James realises he has to adopt a different mentality.

James says goodbye to the man he is when not in combat. To stand any chance of survival, he needs to change. And fast. Unlike living with the few seconds of adrenalin rush that comes with an accident – where a person’s body can react to sudden noise and terror by loosening the bladder and bowels – he has to overcome that natural response and switch off, become desensitised, blot it out.

He has to become a dead man.

And he doesn’t like it. Because each time he finds it a little more difficult to return to that man he is in everyday life. And soon, James knows, it will be impossible.

Yet, McKinley, not flinching like James to the unexpected event, seems able to slot into that role with ease. James can’t decide if he feels envy or hate. Or remorse.

Even McKinley must have people who love him.

The next mortar lands less than twelve feet away, just as James laughs to himself at the unlikely possibility of anyone even liking his fellow officer. The rise in air pressure is so great that, to James, it feels as if he has had his stomach pushed in by a torrent of water and the sensation in his ears is of having been clouted with a cupped hand – a technique he has found useful in unarmed combat. Again his body reacts as though a surge of electricity has flowed through his nerves – every muscle tenses as if suffering cramp and then tingles like pins-and-needles. The shrapnel misses him, but he doesn’t know how.

We’re going to be shredded.
As the smoke stings his eyes, James marvels at the fact that he is still alive, and has suffered no great wounds, and knows they have to make a decision about which direction to travel and make it now.

Majors Lovelow and McKinley are on an urgent mission. After coming under heavy fire on landing, they know it has already been compromised.

Now read on:-

Their commander, Lieutenant-Colonel Hayward-Watts, orders them to kill a German: Oberstleutnant Stein Schmidt-Meyer. The reason is that the experienced interrogator has a British officer – Lieutenant Edward Clark – prisoner. This man has details of today’s invasion of the South of France and which ship Churchill will be on.

That is, if they can survive long enough. He spots five white bee-hives ranged along the edge to the adjacent field.

McKinley veers towards them and dives to the ground behind the nearest one. By the time James joins him – sliding to the ground in much the same way as an American baseball player might seek first base – his comrade is lying prone in amongst the grass, his weapon aimed at the pursing troops.

James brings his own weapon to bear on the Germans and finds they have fanned out. And after comparing one of them to Dopey, James starts ascribing the names of the other six dwarves to the men bearing down on them without even thinking about it.

The man to his extreme left, the one with glasses, James sees as Doc. The German next to him – red in the face – is Grumpy.

          Or should that be Bashful?

James changes his mind. The men on their left flank – reacting to McKinley firing at them by throwing themselves to the ground, as well – are Doc and Bashful. The next – directly ahead and bizarrely smiling – is Happy.

On the right, the one reacting to the pollen is Sneezy.

The craggy-faced, tired-looking older man: Sleepy.

Grumpy makes up the last of the German troops. He obliges James by swearing loudly as he strikes a tree with his shoulder while seeking cover.

James opens fire on him before the man can recover. The German’s body slumps into the long grass. In the next instant, a number of bullets strike the bee-hive, ripping it open, exposing drawers of honey and releasing numerous bees.

          “Behind us,” says McKinley.

When James jerks his head around to look, he believes he can discern kaki uniforms. He cannot understand how the men have come to be so far behind enemy lines and supposes that his and McKinley’s mission is not the only operation detailed for this area today.

“It’s our own lads, dear boy,” he says. “Seems every bugger West of Hitler’s Sigfried Line wants us dead today.”

Majors James Lovelow and Rex McKinley are in peril: their mission has been compromised. While they deal with an attack from German soldiers, Oberstleutnant Stein Schmidt-Meyer arrives at Château De Vimer to interrogate Lieutenant Edward Clark. It seems the British officer has important information. Now read on …

As James and McKinley fight a running battle in an orchard, James recalls the mission outlines. Lieutenant Clark is privileged to the details of the invasion on the South of France due to be launched today. Not only that, he knows which vessel the Prime minister, Winston Churchill, will be viewing the operation from. Allied High Command knows that Oberstleutnant Stein Schmidt-Meyer will succeed in getting to the truth. James and McKinley have been tasked to the kill the German and rescue Clark.

Before his last mission, he knew he had killed at least thirty-two men in this war – all soldiers in uniform. On that operation – when he first had the misfortune to meet and try to command the ruthless Major McKinley VC – he had added to the total when he shot a sniper and his spotter, and held a soldier as McKinley thrust a dagger up and into the man’s chest and heart. But for all his own calm efficiency, even James had been caught up in the carnage and mayhem McKinley and his squad instigated. Hell, he had even been forced to kill a war-dog – a brute of an Alsatian – with his bare hands.

            And here he is again.
As they come into land, the Germans open fire, killing the pilots in the port section. The aircraft dives towards the ground. Now read on …

James takes over, but discovers the control column is partially jammed. With McKinley’s help they just manage to level off. The aircraft lands and smashes into an orchard, the port fuselage – transporting the rest of the squad – strikes the trunk of a tree and is demolished. The starboard section also suffers tremendous damage. Struggling free from the wreckage, James’ first concern is for the other men – McKinley’s is their equipment. Just as James discovers that the other soldiers are indeed dead and McKinley produces salvaged ammunition, German soldiers open fire on them.

“They’re coming at us from prepared positions,” says McKinley. “The bastard’s were waiting for us!”

James opens fire – causing the first wave of enemy soldiers to crouch down as they run – and believes that McKinley is thinking along the same lines as he is, but doesn’t like the implications.

“We’ve been set up, dear boy?” he says, already convinced of the answer.

“Like fish in a barrel,” says McKinley, also sending a burst of bullets in the direction of the enemy troops.

He glances across at James.

“Someone has talked,” he says. “Someone meant for us to die here.”

Tune in next week – … but wait!
I have decided to move away from using this blog as a day-to-day update (find me on Facebook) and to provide a précis of each new first draft chapter(s) of my current work – uploaded every Tuesday afternoon. Enjoy. The story so far ….

<span style='font-size:12.0pt; and carry German MP44 assault rifles. The glider is being piloted from the adjoining port section, which also carries the other six members of the squad. As the aircraft is buffeted by the horrendous slipstream of their tug aeroplane, the airframe protests at the excessive speed they are doing. They have to make their landing point before dawn and James is suffering from terrible claustrophobia – the mechanical noises only serve to increase his anxiety. McKinley – an arch rival – seems to be totally calm. They are released and begin a rapid descent. As they start their final landing approach, German troops open fire.
